Now's the time to stop dreaming about playing the Sax. If you've ever wondered what it's like you can find out NOW at no risk and very low cost. Why not try and see if it's as difficult as you think?
Believe me, it's not difficult, and you'll soon be hooked.
Of course, your first thought might be what type of Saxophone should I get ?
To that I’d ask "what music do you like…?"
The four most common types of saxophone are Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone. There are others but they are somewhat specialist, more expensive, and less frequently used. Essentially, for students, the two that are most popular in bands and orchestras are the Alto and the Tenor. So which is which ?
The Alto is the smaller of the two and is higher pitched. The solo from Baker Street is played on Alto, as well as a lot of eighties pop music, such as Will You by Hazel O’Connor, and Careless Whisper by George Michael.
The Tenor is a slightly larger instrument, with a deeper sound, and is popular (and well suited) for Rock’n’Roll and Blues. A lot of the Rock music from the fifties uses the Tenor, such as this by Big Jay McNeeley, as does the Pink Panther theme tune.
Both instruments are equally at home if you want to play in Concert Band, Classical and Big Bands.
So, all else being equal, it makes sense to start with an instrument that’ll suit the type of music you like. But if you’re not sure call me anytime on 01825 761890 or 07737 665061 and ask for advice.
